Alternatives in medicine

Sir,—ln response to Dr Banbury’s rather confusing article (April 10), I have to agree that some aspects of “fringe medicine” proclaim a cure-all image and become a “get-rich-quick” industry. However, I disagree with his attitudes. The use of herbs, acupuncture, manipulative therapy and other forms of healing have a traditional base that goes back thousands of years; from these roots orthodox medicine has grown. If Western orthodox systems were totally effective and acceptable forms of healing, all other therapies would vanish. Unfortunately, the scientific nature of Western medicine has made health and healing incomprehensible to most people. Perhaps holistic alternative therapies offer people an active role in the management of their own health. Healing is an art as well as a science. Let us work together to improve the quality of life, health and healing through co-operation, education and understanding. — Yours, etc., MICHAEL J. COLE, Classical Acupuncture Society.
