The economy
Sir,—ln a week when business community confidence levels have sunk to a nine-year low, the Minister of Finance revises his Budget deficit by over 30 per cent and a huge hike in Post Office charges Is announced. One wonders where the consensus and unity espoused by Mr Lange has gone. We note Mr Lange has changed the tone of his rhetoric but what must frighten all thinking people is the obvious expectation Mr Douglas has that GST will carry him through the financial mire. Yet who is left to foot the bill? With high wage rounds, high interest rates and high unrest, the Government is clinging to GST as one clings to a lifeboat when all else is sinking. — Yours, etc.,
WILLIAM RICHARDSON. February 20, 1986.
