Call for lotto to aid sport
■ . " - <: £ fMv PA Wellington Lotto profits could be used for funding sport so the Government could stop liquor and tobacco company sport sponsorship, says the National Alcohol Prevention Conference.
The Government is now deciding whether to intro-, duce lotto, which is estimated to be able to raise $24 million a year.
The conference’s spokesman, Mr Peter Burton, said that lotto profits could best be used to boost sport and health in New Zealand./
“At the moment, alcohol and tobacco companies give sport in New Zealand about $3 million a year in sponsorship. That should not happen — they are unhealthy products and it is a double standard for them to be linked to sport and health,” he said.
