PA Rotorua A swarm of earth tremors in the Tarawera area late on Saturday and early yesterday alarmed residents. One of them telephoned Rotorua police about 2 a.m. to say he had felt about 290 tremors since 11 p.m. Saturday, at least 20 of which rattled windows. The. resident said the
tremors were accompanied by rumbling noises. A Rotorua D.S.I.R. geologist, Dr lan Nairn, said yesterday that about 30 of the shakes were “significant” A seismograph on Mount Tarawera recorded the swarm and a check would be made at Taupo seismograph today to try to establish the swarm’s centre,
seemed to be in the Ro-tamahana-Waimangu area. <■ Dr Nairn said similar swarms occurred in the same area almost annually. A more severe series occurred in 1983. There ‘ was no reason for alarm, he said. Ground measurement checks after previous, swarms showed no changes. .
