Spirit of N.Z. to be launched
PA Hamilton More than 800 high school pupils a year will take a “character-build-ing” voyage in the new Spirit of New Zealand yacht being launched in Auckland today. She is a sister ship to the Spirit of Adventure.
The Duke of Edinburgh, whose son, . Prince Edward has sailed in the Spirit of Adventure as a trainee, will inspect the new vessel, and meet trainees.
A spokesman, Mr Stephen Fisher, said that before commissioning in June, the vessel was likely to be debt-free, thanks to fund-raising efforts.
“That equates to nearly one dollar to every man, woman and child throughout New Zealand," he said.
The present training ship, Spirit of Adventure, which has given more than 7000 selected high school pupils experience under sail since her launching in 1973, takes 575 teen-agers a year. The Spirit of New Zealand will add 828 to the number of places available.
The new ship was designed by Ted Ewbank, and Don Brooke. She has been under construction since September, 1983, at the Thackwray shipyard in west Auckland.
