Croquet success for Jackson at expense of his wife
Husband and wife were on opposite sides of the hoop when Bob Jackson crossed mallets with Mary Jackson in the doubles at the N.Z.I. Finance national croquet championships in Christchurch yesterday. It was a high-class clash, with Jackson being partnered by a national representative, John Hogan, and Mrs Jackson teaming up with the former New Zealand women’s titleholder, Susan Wiggins. But the men gained the upper hand to win, 26-9, their second victory of the day. Jackson and Mrs Wiggins have both been national champions in two sports. Jackson was once the table tennis king, and Mrs Wiggins excelled in golf. Another feature of yesterday’s play was a triple peel achieved by a young Wellington competitor, Peter Gleeson, in gaining a thumping win in the levels singles. He went on to secure a comfortable success in the men’s championship. Abbreviations used in the results are.— C, Christchurch; W, Welling-
