Andrew Nuttall spearheads comfortable cricket win
A superbly consistent bowling effort by Andrew Nuttall put Canterbury B in a position to cruise to a comfortable outright win over Wellington B in their three-day cricket match at Hagley Oval yesterday. The left-arm spinner bowled an unceasingly troublesome length to take five wickets for 59 in his 41 overs, 20 of which were maidens.
A demoralised Wellington, following its unremarkable first innings total of 192, was all out before tea in its second innings yesterday for 198, setting Canterbury a target of 48 runs to win and a leisurely three hours in which to score them. The match had threatened to expire in a draw after Canterbury, which is already assured of the national second Xis cricket championship, had pushed to an overnight lead of 130,
mainly thanks to a rattling 127 by the in-form Chris Flanagan. Flanagan’s wicket was still intact when he ran out of partners yesterday with the Canterbury score at 343. Only two runs had been added to the overnight total. Wellington started its second innings reasonably solidly on a wicket that was not helping bowlers greatly. Wellington was soon in trouble after the departure of the opening pair, however, losing five wickets for the addition of only 34 runs. Nuttall’s economical and successful bowling was backed up by keener fielding as Canterbury caught the scent of an outright win. The Canterbury leg spinner, Mark Priest, chimed in with three for 77, 19 of his 37 overs also being maidens. Kevin Congdon was out for one at the start of Canterbury’s second innings,
but David Boyle was in confident form. Boyle (30 not out) and James Shipley (16) went on to score the required runs with almost two hours of play remaining.
