Equality for men

Sir, — It is very sad that Susan Taylor uses class distinction for those who open doors for women. When I arrived in New Zealand, over 33 years ago, I was told, in good. Kiwi language, that “Jack is as good as his Master.” I presumed this meant Jane too, since I was married to one, and still am. There are very few of we door-openers these days, mainly because of “women’s lib” and the lack of thanks. If showing courtesies to women is for the “upper classes,” as Naomi Roberts implies, then all the homework in the world will never make Jack open doors for Jane, or equalise the sexes. Let us agree that both sexes are in a parlous state at the moment and a few courtesies shown by both sides would help the women to be women and the men to brush up their male status. We need the women to boost our ego. The women certainly do not need us to boost theirs, but we do. — Yours, etc.,
