Industrial action delayed by police

PA Auckland South Auckland police have voted to support their national union in delaying industrial action over pay claims. But they will ask their national association to explain why the limited industrial action they had agreed to was not taken after the Government’s 5 per cent pay rise offer. All police districts rejected the wage offer and voted for limited industrial action but the Police Association postponed it until the Government reconsiders the pay increase on January 21. The southern division committee voted on Tues-

day to advise the union to give notice of action if their pay claims were not met on January 21. The chairman, Stuart Mangnall, said the division would not take its own form of action now but would discuss it if pay claims were refused and the union took no action next week. “Everybody is a bit fedup with the delays but we have to be ham-strung until January 21 to be fair to our national association,” he said. The Auckland division’s chairman, Peter Burridge, said no police officers had asked for a meeting and his division was happy to leave the issue in the hands of the national negotiators.
