Minister’s view on export cut

PA Wellington The Minister of Overseas Trade, Mr Moore, said that New Zealand did not have to accept any reduction in its sheepmeat exports to the European Community as a result of the European Parliament’s vote on the Barbarella Report. The report was drawn up on behalf of the European Parliament’s committee on budgetary control and focused on the cost aspects of the sheepmeat regime. The Parliament in Strasbourg adopted the report on Tuesday. “The situation is not as bad as some people first thought,” Mr Moore said. “In fact we can draw satisfaction that some of the views in the European Parliament, which are more adverse to New Zealand, were not incorporated in the resolution.”

The European Parliament had no legislative power and the resolution would therefore have no immediate practical effect. “It is however an influential body and we must in-

corporate the effects of the resolution in our future negotiating strategy with the Community,” Mr Moore said. “The negotiations are not new.

“They have been going on for years and will continue for many more to come.” The resolution pointed to predictable problems New Zealand had always faced with the European Community.
