Plaque for aviation milestone
PA Auckland A plaque will be unveiled in Auckland next month to commemorate the first successful controlled powered flight in New Zealand 75 years ago.
On February 5, 1911, Vivian Walsh took off from Glenora Park, now part of the Auckland Racing Club’s training ground at Takanini, in an eight-cylinder biplane. The flight lasted about 350 metres and the plane reached an altitude of six metres before landing, undamaged, in a fence.
The chairman of the Walsh Memorial Trust, Mr Allen Williams, hopes Sir Richard Bolt will undertake the unveiling honours on February 5 at a spot near the take-off of the inaugural flight. Sir Richard is the son of George Bolt, who flew with the Walsh brothers from their flying school in Mission Bay, and held several New Zealand flying records.
