Two good softball wins to Canterbury
Canterbury had two good wins over Otago and South Otago on the penultimate day of the national boys’ under 18 softball tournament in Dunedin yesterday. The Canterbury side beat Otago easily enough, 6-1, but needed a sixth innings batting rally to win the second game, 5-3.
While Auckland is unbeaten, Hutt Valley has had one loss, Wellington two and Bay of Plenty, North Shore and Canterbury three each.
Today Canterbury would have to beat both Auckland and Bay of Plenty to finish in fourth place. In the game against South Otago the scores were locked at 2-2 when Canterbury batted in the bottom of
the sixth innings. Good batting allowed Errol Byrne, Dave Hawker and Bevan Nalepa to all come home and give the team a decisive lead.
Against Otago Canterbury scored two runs in the first innings, one more in the third and three in the sixth for its big win.
Results:— Canterbury 6, Otago 1; Auckland 6, Wellington 2; Bay of Plenty 6, North Shore 4; Hutt Valley 11, South Otago 0; Canterbury 5, South Otago 3; Auckland 13, North Shore 2; Hutt Valley 7, Bay of Plenty 0; Bay of Plenty 13, Otago 0; Wellington 15, Otago 2; South Otago 9, Southland 8. • Meanwhile, in the national under 16 girls softball tournament in Hamilton Canterbury
needs to beat Waikato today to make the semifinals.
Costly infield errors cost Canterbury victory yesterday in a 7-4 scoreline against Wellington.
Canterbury’s runs were scored by Bridget Smitheram (2), Mandy Karatau and Raewyn Rudolph. The Canterbury girls had a tight game with Hutt Valley, winning, 1-0, when an error was forced in the fourth innings and Michelle Powell scored. There was an excellent pitching performance from Tania Meier who took six strike-outs and allowed only . one Hutt Valley batter to make base safely.
