Judo line-up
PA Wellington The New Zealand Judo Federation has named a strong team for the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games where judo will be a demonstration sport. The team manager, Norm Holden, of Tokoroa, said Donna Guy, who will compete in the 61kg women’s division, was the team’s leading medal chance although a favourable draw would create several other prospects.
Judo will become a programmed sport at Commonwealth Games for the
first time at Auckland in 1990. Because it is only a demonstration sport at Edinburgh the team will not receive financial support from the Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association. The team is: Men: 60kg, Richard Kent (Auckland); 65kg, Stephen Corking (Auckland); 71kg, John Moody (Christchurch); 78kg, Bill Vincent (New Plymouth); 86kg, Geoff Watson (Auckland); 95kg, Mike Smith (Christchurch); 95kg, Clinton Rickards (Rotorua).
