The Nicholas brothers wrap up yachting

The two Aucklanders, Terry and Peter Nicholas, have wrapped up the Mahan Marine 2001 Wetsuits 470 Class National Yachting Championships, sailed on Lyttelton Harbour yesterday.

the Nicholas brothers dominated yesterday’s two races, and headed off Mark Milbum, and Simon Mander of Canterbury, who finished runners up in both events, with one race of the series still to sail. The fifth race of the series was sailed in eight to 10 knot easterlies, with the Nicholas brothers showing the way. They were first round the top mark by 15s from Leslie and Jenny Egnot of Canterbury, followed closely by Milburn in third place.

Nicholas then opened up a large lead, in the run to the bottom mark on Egnot, who increased their advantage to 16s over Milburn, on the down wind run. From then on Nicholas’ lead was never threatened, and they went on to win from Egnot by two minutes, with Milburn 16s further back in third place. In the sixth race the fleet got off to a good start, with Milburn and Nicholas showing out early on the beat to the top mark. Nicholas then opened up a 5s lead over Milburn and increased it to 17s by the wing mark. In the run to the bottom mark, Nicholas was out to 25s over Milburn, who increased his lead in the down wind run, to 20s over lan

Stewart, and Craig Watson (Auckland) at the mark. Nicholas kept his advantage on the beat to the top mark, and was first round from Milburn, with Stevens still in third place losing touch with the leaders. On the windward-leeward leg the Egnot sisters passed Stewart on the beat to leeward, and were third round the mark 35s down on Nicholas with Milbum still holding second place. In the run to the wing mark Nicholas extended his lead to 48s at the mark, over Milburn, with Egnot 27s further back. As the boats rounded the bottom mark Milbum chopped Nicholas’ lead back to 24s with his superior boat speed down wind. On the final beat up to

the finish, Milbum closed within 19s of Nicholas, but could not head him off, and finished second, with Egnot clinching third, from Stevens. Results.— Race five: T. and P.
