N.Z. link with South America

PA Wellington New Zealand has been accorded observer status under the Cartagena Agreement. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said yesterday that the agreement, otherwise known as the Andean Pact, was established in 1970 by Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.

The grouping was established to work towards a common market “The New Zealand observer will be the New Zealand Ambassador to Peru, Mr Peter Bennett,” Mr Lange said.

New Zealand’s interest in this region of Latin America stemmed from its potential as a consumer of traditional New Zealand exports. “With an emphasis being given to agricultural development within the pact, there could also be opportunities for New Zealand’s exporters of agricultural expertise and technology,” Mr Lange said.
