Many children missing day at beach: survey

PA Wellington A new survey backs assertions that thousands of children might be missing what most New Zealanders take for granted — a day at the beach, said the Minister of Sport and Recreation, Mr Moore. The survey was conducted by four South Auckland primary schools at the request of the Recreation and

Sport Council, Mr Moore said in an address at the opening of softball’s Hall of Fame in Wellington. It came after similar assertions by the Sport Development Inquiry and a push in the Government’s recreation inquiry report last month for all people to have equal access to recreational activities. The latest survey covered

1429 pupils, Mr Moore said. It found that an average of 23 per cent of the children had not been to a beach. In some of the younger classes, 52 per cent of the children said they had never been to a beach. “Some of us might understand a survey result like this if the schools were 300 mules from the coast,” Mr Moore said.
