National’s leadership

Sir,—Congratulations to Oliver Riddell for his excellent articles on the National Party in opposition. These record contemporary history and are valuable to us, the public, who want to know the real news. Unfortunately much of what we get from “wire” news, and very much of the New Zealand radio news is what I would call “managed news” or propaganda. The real Labour Government has yet to appear. How can National become an opposition of credibility, when it produces a leadership which is a lookalike to Labour? Take out the tricky lawyers and put up people who have solid proven experience. Take out Mr Lange’s contemporary and put in Mr George Gair (he is 59). Make it apparent that there is a choice, not just a choice of wordsmiths.—Yours, etc., G. W. HUNT. January 12, 1986.
