Zimbabwe
Sir,—T. R. Loudon has his facts wrong. The major contesting parties in the recent democratic election in Zimbabwe were Z.A.N.U. (P.F.) and Z.A.P.U. The former was led by Robert Mugabe, the latter by Joshua Nkomo. That the two parties should converge is understandable. They worked together in the war as the Patriotic Front and have served together in the Government. The destabilising effect of apartheid for the region, with the Pretoria regime’s invasion of its neighbours and threats of intervening in Zimbabwe, make it even more intelligible. — Yours, etc., LUKE TRAINOR.
