Motorway cyclists

Sir,—An item in Reporter’s Digry today raises the question of cyclists on the Northern Motorway. Cycle tourists tend to be careful

road users, particularly on busy highways. If our heads are down, it is only sufficient to avoid broken glass on the road. Alternative routes are welcome and often well patronised by cyclists. The signs at the beginning of the motorway are an example of the low status which cyclists have in the eyes of many traffic engineers. The sign may be of regulation size, but is inadequate and unhelpful. What is needed is an informative sign of the proportions of those used to indicate the bypass around the city which passes the airport. Who can blame the foreign cycle tourist who, after a long day, rides on the motorway instead of a poorly labelled route? Cyclists do not enjoy getting lost or taking unwanted side trips.—Yours, etc.,

ALLAN MARSHALL. January 15, 1986.
