South Africa
Sir, — South Africa is the only stable part of the African continent, and the part on which all Africans
depend for their • survival. Every year hundreds of thousands -of blacks apply for legal entry into South Africa and are. accepted; thousands more enter illegally. The reason: security/ work opportunity, education, health services, a higher standard of living and a caring public. There is the same judicial system as in New Zealand, a free press, and fewer policemen per 1000 people than in New Zealand. There are, however, those who would sacrifice the last South African black to secure a continuous supply of the strategically most important minerals, to the Soviet Union. As a member of the “Black Sash” F. Farrell’s comments (“The Press” January 13) are. predictable. If her comments had any validity, migration, rather than immigration, would be South Africa’s major concern. — Yours, etc., BERT WALKER. January 13, 1986.
