West Coast forests

Sir,—lndigenous commitments expire in Buller in July, 1986, in north and south Westland in December, 1989. Policy requirement for further supply is sustainable yield, demanding at expiry a reduction in cu m annual cut (Forest Service figures) in Buller from 24,696 to 1470, north Westland 48,884 to 3340 and south Westland 67,700 to 8150. Adequate alternative exotics are available in north Westland from 1993, but not for 20 years in Buller and 40 years in south Westland. Sustained yield figures for Buller and north Westland are dependent on reserve decisions. The Government has procrastinated year after year. The crunch has now come in Buller. In Buller and north Westland a beech scheme is the most feasible way of helping to bridge the supply gap; it could also lay the foundation for a long-term plantation regime providing good quality saw logs. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT. Wellington, January 9, 1986.
