Gentle persons
Sir,—What a classic statement of the double standard made by K. Talbot (“The Press," January 14). I was under the impression that the maintenance of order and public safety, not to mention morality, was a community issue, and therefore as much the responsibility of
men as of women. In a world where men still largely make the laws, start the wars, and limit the power of others, it is a great irony to take women to task for failing in their role of “moderators of male excesses.” The responsibility for the crimes cited by your correspondent lies partly with the criminals, of whatever gender, but mostly with a society which still teaches that the possession of material wealth and the exercise of absolute power over others is desirable and praiseworthy.— Yours, etc., PADDY AUSTIN. January 14, 1986.
