Boost for Baldwin
PA Tauranga Paritutu’s Brian Baldwin has at last been successful in his bid to qualify for the Countrywide $50,006 professional bowls finals in March. In a zone tournament completed at the Tauranga Bowling Club’s greens yesterday afternoon he outpointed Peter Shaw, of
Manawatu, three sets to two. The set scores, 5-7, 8-1, 18, 7-2, 7-5, confirm the fluctuating fortunes of the match with Shaw scoring consistently on the longer heads while Baldwin built up his winning advantage on the short and middle-dis-tance heads. The final set of fijjst to seven took more tbFa an
hour to complete and was in doubt to the very last bowl. With his third delivery Shaw pushed the kitty into the ditch and with his fourth drew well inside Baldwin’s third bowl. Then Baldwin, with a final flourish, ran Shaw’s counter off the green for the match to qualify for the finals at his seventh tournament attempt.
