Howarth sidelined
PA Alexandra A back injury has sidelined Geoff Howarth, the Northern Districts and former New Zealand captain, from the Shell Trophy cricket match against Otago, which begins at Molyneux Park today. The captaincy has been assumed by Chris Kuggeleijn, who captained Northern Districts when Howarth was absent on
international duties last summer. Howarth returned to Tauranga from Christchurch yesterday morning for treatment to his injured back. His place in the side has been taken by Grant McKenzie, from Hamilton, who bats capably and also bowls off-spinners. Kuggeleijn, aged 29, a trainee teacher from Hamil-
ton, said after his team arrived from Christchurch last night: “Geoff has had a really bad time during the last few months and we hope things pick up for him. “We hope he will be fit for our next game, against Central Districts at Hamilton, but who knows? He bent down to field a ball just before lunch in the match against Christchurch and his back just went.”
