Equality for men

Sir, — I could never understand the peculiar desire of women to be equal with men. Why on earth any woman wants to lower herself to the status of men I will, never realise. There used to be a day when men opened doors for women, gave up a seat for them in public transport, deferred to their wishes in the home, carried things for them (light or heavy), arranged an easy way for them to motivate, etc., etc., etc. How many women receive such courtesies these days? How many men think enough of the female sex to bother about such courtesies? When I was growing up there were ways the harridans of

the day whose example made the status quo more acceeptable and much more preferable. There could come a time when the human becomes sexless and the fun in life will be gone. Fortunately the mothering instinct ingrained in women will never permit “equality for men.” — Yours, etc., G. P. L. BRETHERTON. January 8, 1986.
