Size problem

Sir,—The quest of L. R. Sollitt and other correspondents to find fashionable clothes in size 16 is no more frustrating than my own to find sizes 8 or 9. More often than not I am helpfully directed to the children’s or teens’ wear department, which at 35 is a bit much. My own observation is that in North America the shops abound with racks of sizes 7 to 11. In Europe, sizes 14 to 16 are more than adequately catered for. In New Zealand it would seem to be 12 to 14. It is obviously not in a particular country’s manufacturing interest to cater to all sizes equally. My suggestion to correspondents and readers who have problems finding the smaller or larger sizes, and who cannot afford the shopping spree overseas, is to wait until “sale” time. It is then that we size nines and size 16s can find plenty, much to the frustration of average-sized New Zealanders. — Yours, etc., L. M. CROUCHER. January 8, 1986.
