Beach life-saving

Sir, — I read with concern that the beach patrols near Christchurch are struggling to keep up with the demands of. their rescue work because of a shortage of funds. Many may suggest more Government grants and hand-outs, but my suggestion is that for those who want the added safety of swimming between the flags with a lifeguard on hand should pay a small fee to the life-saving club. Swimmers who are too mean to support such a cause and pay their way can go down the beach, swim for nothing, and risk whatever befalls them. This would not only save the clubs having to beg for money, but also create jobs and real life-saving professionals and possibly generate enough funds to buy better and more effective lifesaving equipment. — Yours, etc., ROBIN BOOTH.
