Mr McLay and A.N.Z.U.S.
Sir,—ln his latest speech to an American audience in Hawaii, the Leader of the Opposition, Jim McLay, displays a fawning subservient attitude to the United States which will disgust patriotic New Zealanders. Mr McLay has pledged that a return of National (under his leadership) to the Treasury benches will allow this country’s foreign policy to be dictated by the United States. Contrast this with the result of a recent 8.8. C. poll carried out throughout Great Britain which shows our Prime Minister, David Lange, to be the second-most popular figure in the world, second only to Bob Geldof. Hero worship in itself is seldom a good thing, but surely even Mr McLay can realise that his stance of “America first and foremost” is not shared by many New Zealand voters. —
Yours, etc., R. L. PLUCK. Tai Tapu, January 8, 1986.
