New $6 million office block
A seven-storey office block, worth ?6 million, is being built between the Horticultural Hall and the Harley Chambers in Cambridge Terrace. The building is a joint project in which the Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating, Ltd, superannuation scheme is the principal partner. The block was designed by Christchurch architects, Warren and Mahoney, and features mirror glass windows and a gable style roof. Another feature is a high entrance and lobby in which Jordan Sandman Smythe, members of the New Zealand Stock Exchange and
minor partners in the project, will provide a panel of video display units showing share prices and other financial information. Fifty-eight car-parks will be provided at the back of the site as well as space for 15 bicycles. Both firms hope that the building will be seen as a financial centre for Christchurch and tenants are envisaged to include a stockbroking firm, finance company, merchant bank, building society, chartered accountant and a legal firm. Work has started on the building and is expected to be finished by November.
