Projectionists threaten action
Picture theatre projectionists are threatening industrial action against Masters Independent Cinemas, of Christchurch, over what their union believes is an “engineered” dismissal. The secretary of the South Island Pictures Pro-
jectionists’ Union, Mr Paul Piesse, would not say yesterday what action has been planned but it is believed a ban will be imposed to prevent Masters’ theatres obtaining film from other theatres.
Mr Piesse was not sure when the action would take place. He was waiting for reaction from union mem-
bers. The dismissal had happened about two weeks ago, said Mr Piesse. Dismissals of this type were “not uncommon” and involved a worker being provoked into resigning, he said.
Masters run the Midcity, Academy, Hollywood, Stagedoor, Northside, and Skyway cinemas. The owner of the theatres, Mr Lang Masters, said that he knew a projectionist had recently resigned but he had
heard nothing of industrial action. His theatres had not beenlaffected by any action yest&day.
