Swansea lifeline?

NZPA-Reuter London Troubled Swansea City, 14 days from possible extinction, has been thrown a financial lifeline — by the English soccer league leader, Manchester United. United has agreed to play Swansea in a fund-raising friendly match at the Welsh club’s Vetch Field home on January 13 — the day the third division club could fold for good. Receipts from the match could make the difference between life and death for Swansea, which needs to raise more than £700,000 to launch a new company. Swansea was wound up in

the London High Court and ordered to cease trading earlier last month after being refused more time to pay debts. Days later they were granted a reprieve and given until January 13 to clear some of their debts and form a new company. The match could also suit United, its manager, Ron Atkinson, likely to give the England captain, Bryan Robson, a run. Robson has been restricted to just 14 minutes action since damaging a hamstring in England’s World Cup qualifier against Turkey at Wembley in October.
