Aust, wrestling coach banned

NZPA-AAP Melbourne Australia’s national wrestling coach, Sam Parker, has been banned for five years by the Australian Wrestling Union — the sport’s ruling body. The ban was announced by the A.W.U. director, Josip Mrkoci, and follows an alleged betting incident at the national championships in June. Mr Mrkoci said the ban was effective immediately and would prevent Parker from coaching at, or attending any, national or inter-

national wrestling competition. He said the world wrestling association — F.I.L.A. — would be notified of the A.W.U.’s action which came after a delegates’ hearing in Canberra last month. The alleged bet concerned a bout between a Parkertrained wrestler, Chris Brown, and a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Ziggy Kelevitz. Mr Parker, a respected coach and former Olympic representative, had been appointed to the new position of senior national coach by the A.W.U. in April.
