Heats clean sweep for Annan

Joe Annan handled his powerful car expertly to easily win all three heats of the South Island sportsman championship at Woodford Glen Speedway on Wednesday evening.

The Christchurch driver led throughout from the pole position in heat one. Ross McLeod trailed him and then came Bruce Watt (Invercargill), Keith Johnstone (Geraldine) and Ron Springs (Cromwell). McLeod spun his car in front of Watt and Johnstone, which allowed Spriggs to sneak into second place. Spriggs led out from the front in heat two, and Annan, when improving from mid-field, spun the centre out of the back right rim, the car quickly stopping on three wheels.

With one lap not having been completed, a re-run was ordered, Annan having time to replace his wheel and take his place in his starting grid.

Again Spriggs shot to the lead, but Annan sprinted through the field and took the lead on lap five. He took the flag ahead of Spriggs, John Newman (Blenheim), and the Christchurch pair, Brian Wendt and Doug Giles.

Annan had an advantage of two points over Spriggs starting heat three, with Newman, Watt and Wendt all in with a chance.' 'Newman and Annan

were off the back marks for the final heat. Giles went to the lead from Wendt and Annan soon moved into a challenging position. When Giles veered wide after about four laps, Annan slipped through and won decisively. Final points:—Annan 36, Spriggs 31, Wendt and Newman 26, Watt and Giles 24.

Barry Stewart, of Timaru, had a successful evening in his Corina 6, driving well to record a win and two thirds in the A grade saloon car races. James Berryman, in his Rover VB, won the saloon feature, although the runnerup, John Rodgers, was unlucky in that he was held up three times by slower cars. Results:—
