Two seamen expelled

PA Auckland Two Korean seamen, one of them recovering in Whangarei Hospital from injuries suffered in a brawl, have been expelled from their ship Reefer Badger. The master decided yesterday that he did not want

the pair aboard when the ship left Auckland next week.

Detectives boarded the vessel yesterday and interviewed the master and 19 crew about the fight on Tuesday which left Young Min Lee in Whangarei Hos-

pital with a cut on the left arm and a gash to the head.

The injured man was flown to Kaitaia in an R.N.Z.A.F. helicopter. Detective Inspector John Hughes said five policemen, using the ship’s master as an interpreter, boarded the Reefer Badger yesterday. No action would be taken by the police, although the injured seaman would still be interviewed when an interpreter was found. Mr lan McKay, a spokesman for the ship’s New Zealand agent, McKay Shipping, said last evening that both seamen expelled from the ship would be sent to Korea. “The master does not want them on board,” he said. “So we will send them as soon as we can.”

Young Min Lee, who was progressing well in hospital last evening, is expected to be discharged at the weekend.
