Evernden gets winner’s cheque

NZPA staff correspondent Sydney The New Zealander, Kelly Evernden, was beaten in the final of the New South Wales Open tennis championship, but got the winner’s cheque anyway, a report in Sydney said. The French ace, Henri Leconte, came back to win the three-set battle and after being presented with his cheque during 20-minute victory formalities, rushed through a press conference, and dashed to the airport for a flight home to Paris. The “Daily Telegraph,” said that on the way to the airport, and with just 20 or so minutes before takeoff, Leconte opened the envelope to look at his victory cheque, and ordered a uturn back to the White City courts. What he had was not the 537,094 winner’s cheque, but the $20,418 made out to Evernden as runner-up.

Before he had dashed to the airport the first time, Leconte had phoned his wife, Brigitte, in Paris, to tell her he had won, and was on his way. After swapping cheques with Evernden, he phoned her again, this time to tell her he was going to be home a day late.
