New Canty place names
Canterbuiy has a number of new official place names. The New Zealand Geographic Board approved the names recently, many of which have been in use for many years but not appeared on official maps. They are: Mount Vernon (the hill from which Mount Vernon Park derives its name, and which is probably a family name from the Morten or Downes families.) Castle Hill Village (the mountain village on the West Coast Road just north of the Thomas River). Boyle Village (at the junction of the Lewis Pass Road and the Boyle River). Albert- Lake (formed in 1916 east of Victoria Lake in North Hagley Park). Studholme (on the Main South Road east of Waimate; formerly Studholme Junction).
