Bid to prevent accidents
The Christchurch-based S.I.M.U. insurance company has begun selling a highlevel brake light at cost price to motorists in an attempt to reduce the number of nose-to-tail road accidents.
The company has bought 5000 of the lights, which are installed in the rear window of cars in addition to the usual rear lights. It is selling them at the cost price of $25 each. “This particular type is not available on the market, but they would sell at something like the $45 or $5O range,” says Mr Brian McKessar, S.I.M.U’s general manager. ‘-It is an interior centremounted light. The idea is an expression of our confidence in the ability 'of the light to reduce accidents. “Tests in America have shown that one in five accidents are rear-enders. Exhaustive tests with these lights have shown that they can reduce these accidents 50 per cent.”
