Rubber strike continues

Canterbury rubber workers have now been on strike for a little more than a fortnight and attempts this week to find a way to settle their dispute over the Canterbury collective agreement failed.

The Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union sent a telegram to the employers suggesting that a resumption of formal talks might be beneficial. The employers replied suggesting that the parties return to conciliation and get a part-settle-ment, referring the dispute over the wages of three grouDS to the Arbitration

Court. The union replied that that would be acceptable, provided the employers agreed to pass on hourly wage increases gained in the award to bonus payments which are negotiated separately with each com : pany. The union’s secretary, Mr Roger Brott, said that Feltex had already agreed that that would be acceptable, but the employers had replied saying that it was not acceptable because the bonus payments were not linked to the award.

“We say that is a nonsense,” said Mr Brott.
