Contribution by youth
Sir,—As a child psychotherapist, I often see children with low selfesteem. Although much of this situation can be attributed to factors within families, the wider community contributes as well. The considerable positive contribution that children and adolescents can make to our quality oflife often is not encouraged or appreciated. We regularly hear about any problems young people are a part of, such as vandalism, glue sniffing, etc. In contrast, I thought it commendable that “The Press” noted on its.front page on Saturday that the Summer Times banners were taken from designs by Christchurch fourth formers. I also commend whoever conceived and carried through the idea of having young people take part in this project, where their creative and constructive abilities can receive maximum public exposure. Such actions may enhance young people’s feelings about themselves by showing that they can give to society and be valued for it. — Yours, etc.,
MARTHA S. WAGONER. December 1, 1985.
