Job applicant
Sir,-The late Sir William Stevenson, of Auckland, who spread his philanthropy and financial help to good causes very widely round the country, was a down-to-earth character, if ever there was one. He used to say that he would like to go round the universities, and endow a new chair at each. This would be the chair of “getting cracking and commonsense." Good marks in this course would be a prerequisite for applicants for any position which entails spending
public money, and a special necessity for harbour board engineers. Since it may present some difficulty to get qualified people in these courses from the usual academic circles, I am, with customary modesty, prepared to accept the first professorial chair myself. I shall require a thumping salary, in line with other professors, and this demonstrates my expertise in both these important educational disciplines. — Yours, etc.,
B. R. WALKER. November 29, 1985.
