Transfer tax
Sir, — Don Brash is not just the chairman of the Government’s advisory panel on GST, he is also a former National Party candidate who was beaten by Garry Knapp, so it is not surprising that he is saying such ridiculous things about the effects of a transfer tax. Saying that it would cause financial transactions to stop “stone dead” is as absurd as saying sales taxes would result in the elimination of all sales. Certainly there would be a reduction in the number of some types of transaction, but that is a good thing. As to whether businesses would finance a campaign for transfer taxes, the Democratic Party, unlike Don Brash, asked for advice from marketing and fundraising experts, and were told that some business people will. — Yours, etc., J. C. RING. December 2, 1985.
