Liquor poll

Sir, — Regarding your leading article “No need for liquor poll” (November 28): 1. It would be a pity to do away with it when societal trends if they continue with the impetus and direction as at present overseas, may in future make this an urgent and vital decision. 2. Unless the Government is as avid a partaker of liquor as the liquor companies are naturally enough of its profits, then the Government would certainly be the more impartial manager of the industry. Obviously the tragedies and harm resulting from overconsumption are of mixed “concern” to liquor tradespeople. 3. If profits are indeed not great or certain, the only way they would be increased “satisfactorily” would be by even greater alcohol consumption. 4. Perhaps it is only a sort of social pride which keeps us from drinking alcohol-free wine, beer etc. If this were overcome, tragedies, costs of research into “problems,” costs of compensation, etc., would be non-existent. — Yours, etc., N. W. MILANOVICH. November 28, 1985.
