Penalties for rape

Sir, — Castration is not the answer to rape for two reasons. First, unless we bring in all-female juries, the conviction rate for rape would be even lower than it is at the moment. Second, because rape is not a sexual crime but a crime of power. For the same reason prostitution is not the answer. Most rapists, it has been shown, could have had a willing woman but preferred the kick of rape. Rape is not considered “wrong” by most rapists or most “ordinary men.” In

fact 66 per cent of men are capable of violence towards women. Rape is a social disease which is easily spread — from fathers to sons, between peers, from the media, and even in our schools. Until men and women affirm women’s humanity and right to self-determination rape will be one of our society’s ugly facets. — Yours, etc., J. VARGA. December 2, 1985.
