Deviation report wilt be used
The Christchurch City Council will use a working group report that supports the abandonment of' the Sockburn-Styx railway deviation as the base for its comments to the Railways Corporation on the deviation.
The Canterbury United Council report says the high costs do not justify abandoning the present line through Riccarton and Fendalton. The councillors at a townplanning committee meeting noted that the abandoning of the deviation would make the development of the airport master plan much easier. The deviation was to have run near the airport, bisecting an area intended for cargo development.
The report found little difference in the costs of maintaining the present line and building the deviation. The costs of maintenance
included overbridges, which would be the responsibility of the City Council. It would be many years before these bridges were justified. The councillors also supported safety measures such as line barriers, provision of cycle and pedestrian ways, that trains slow down and make less noise in the builtup area, and that the line be improved in appearance.
