Melons confiscated
PA Auckland Tongan watermelons from about 400 Auckland shops have been confiscated and buried by the Ministry of Agriculture after fruit fly larvae were found on a sample. Dr Alex Rainbow, officer in charge of the Ministry’s plant protection centre in Auckland, said that he was fairly sure the larvae were not that of the worst species of fruit fly — Australian or
Mediterranean. He said that the fly was probably one of numerous Pacific Island species, but identification would be possible only when the larvae hatched. The contaminated watermelons arrived by ship more than two weeks ago. Samples passed port inspection but a slice containing larvae was brought to the Ministry by a consumer last week.
