Meeting to look at river use

People interested in the possible uses and misuses of river environments have been invited to attend a public meeting at Holy Trinity Church, Stanmore Road, tomorrow evening. A Christchurch landscape architect, Mr Don MiskelL will address the meeting, which has been organised by Avonside Drive residents. Now that the Christchurch City Council has lifted its expressway designation on Avonside' Drive, the residents wanted the opportunity to say what they wanted, said one of the meeting’s organisers, Mrs Nadine Wilson.

Representatives of the Christchurch Civic Trust and the Historic Places Trust also have been invited to speak at the meeting, and an invitation had been sent

to a Christchurch City councillor, Mrs Mollie Clark. The council had lifted the designation from Avonside Drive and the central oneway street systems with the intention of reintroducing it in a different form when the district scheme became operative, said the City Engineer, Mr John Ince. It had lifted its designation from these streets when it seemed unlikely the Planning Tribunal would give approval to those designations in addition to the planned northern arterial expressway, said Mr Ince. “When the District Scheme comes up for review again, everyone will have the opportunity to put forward their ideas.” The meeting will be at 7.30 pm.
