A.A. wants better lights on cycles

Better lighting on bicycles is sought by the Automobile Association (Canterbury). The association has told the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebbie, that there is cause for great concern at the high risk faced by cyclists on New Zealand roads.

In a submission on cycle safety, the association asked for legislation to make it compulsory for bicycles to have New Zealand stand-ards-approved lighting.

Regular bicycle safetychecks should be made in schools and more education programmes on bicycle safety were needed, said the association. It also believes that a New Zealand standard should be introduced for bicycle lighting, as few lighting systems now available are effective. Traffic officers should also actively enforce the road laws relating to bicycles, said the association.
