PA Wellington The final day of Estimates will be debated in three weeks, said the Leader of the House, Mr Palmer, when Parliament began sitting at 2 p.m. yesterday. However, in response to a question by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr McLay, he said he did not yet have a date for the tabling and debate of the Supplementary Estimates. He thought that may be towards the end of November. After next week’s recess, members would concentrate on legislation on the Order Paper and the introduction of bills, he said. He noted there would be a State luncheon for the retiring Governor-General, Sir David Beattie, at Parliament on Wednesday, November 6. Ministers answered 19 questions.
The chairman of the Commerce and Marketing Committee, Mr Peter Neilson (Lab., Miramar), reported back the committee’s consideration of the estimates for the Accident Compensation Corporation and
the Earthquake and War Damage Commission. The chairman of the Communication and Road Safety Committee, Mr W. P. Jeffries (Lab., Heretaunga), reported back the committee’s consideration of the Railways estimates. The chairman of the Planning and Development Committee, Mr Ken Shirley (Lab., Tasman), reported back the committee’s consideration of the Energy estimates. The Acting Leader of the House, Mr Hunt, moved that the Fish Royalties Bill be taken through its remaining stages before the resumption of the Estimates debate. The bill was given a second reading, passed through its committal stages, and was given a third reading. Members then resumed the interrupted debate on the Appropriation Bill (No. 2) with consideration of the Energy estimates. The estimates of the National Research Advisory Council, the Statistics Department, the Audit Department, Broadcasting, and State Insurance were passed without debate. Members then began debating the Internal Affairs estimates. The estimates were approved and the House rose at 10.53 p.m. It will resume on November 5. _______
