Worry over lodge costs

The future maintenance costs of one of Christchurch’s oldest buildings, Chokebore Lodge, is worrying some Paparua County Councillors. The Paparua County Council has been trying to decide the fate of the 129-year-old building for several months. The council’s reserves committee decided last evening to recommend that the lodge be retained and the reserve contribution fund be used to restore the building. Some councillors ex-

pressed concern at the cost of maintaining the building, so the committee also recommended that a trust fund be set up for administration of the lodge and that there be more research into expenses. At an earlier meeting, the council’s reserve committee had not supported the restoration but the matter had been referred back to it by the council. The future of the lodge should be decided at the next council meeting on November 4. Plans to build a marae at

Kyle Park, Hornby, were discussed at the reserve committee meeting.

Two representatives of the Hornby Maori Club Marae Committee attended the meeting to explain their proposal to build a marae. They asked that two hectare’s of Kyle Park be leased by the council at a nominal rental. The committee decided that more details on the marae were needed and recommended that two councillors and the county chairman meet the Hornby marae committee.
