Car thefts a record, say police

Car converters took a record 59 vehicles in Christchurch during the last four days.

So far the police have recovered about half of them, with a number stripped of essentials and at least six set on fire.

A police spokesman said the stolen vehicles were worth about $129,000. Cortinas, Morris 1100 s, Austins, and Minis had been popular targets. The police are concerned about recent increases in car conversions. In past years, six such cases a week-end was considered a lot, said the spokesman.

About 26 bicycles were taken between last Monday and Friday.
